A successful couples session is a mixture of a lot of little things coming together. While there are some things outside of our control, there are many ways we can up our game to provide our clients with an amazing service.

One of the most important things we can focus on is helping our couples feel more comfortable so we can really start to see them shine in front of the camera.

Capturing those authentic moments can sometimes be challenging, especially when you are working with clients that don’t enjoy taking photos.

Not to worry, all hope is not lost! Below we will discuss a few tips that will drastically help you with couples that feel awkward or uncomfortable in front of the camera.

1. SET EXPECTATIONS IN ADVANCE

Before you even start taking photos, talk with your couple and let them know what they should expect throughout the session. Briefly go over your plans, set them at ease, and set the tone of the shoot. Whether it be goofy and fun, romantic, or a mixture, it’s important to be the glue that holds it all together.

2. PROVIDE ACTIVITIES OR PROMPTS

People who feel awkward in front of a camera typically find that when they have something to do, they feel way more at ease! Finding fun or emotive prompts will help guide the session along and allow them both to be more present. If you’re not sure whether or not to be silly or romantic, just ask. As you go along, you’ll be able to read the situation and decide which route to take it from there.

In addition to prompts, you can add in fun activities they can do together. Maybe it’s a hot day and they want to jump in the water, or maybe they’re celebrating their engagement and want to pop a bottle of champagne. Think of these things as options when you’re planning their session.

3. WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT DOWN

It may sound strange, but sitting poses can be calming for couples. They have less to worry about, like tripping over a rock or not knowing what to do with their hands. Sitting poses can also be more intimate and allow them to be more present with each other.

It’s important that they’re able to face each other and be relaxed. I wouldn’t recommend this if anyone is wearing a short dress or other restrictive clothing but if they’re comfortable with sitting, it’s a great option to help them relax and get some wonderful photos at the same time.

4. ENCOURAGE THEM

Always be mindful of how you’re interacting with your couple. Provide them with positive feedback and try to avoid long bouts of silently staring at your camera screen. It’s important for them to feel confident and encouragement from their photographer will go a long way.

If they do something naturally, make mention of it. You can say things like, “Wow, I love how you hugged him from behind just now. Would you mind doing that again?” Letting them know they’re doing a great job is so vital to them opening up and feeling relaxed.

Keep these tips in mind for more relaxed, happy couples. Regardless of how camera shy they may be!

FAQs

What camera settings are best for couple photos?

It totally depends on what effect you’re going for, but keeping the aperture dilated will help keep the focus on your couples. Anywhere from f/1.4 to f/2.8 is a great place to start.

Should couples bring props to their photoshoot?

It’s always a good idea to bring one or two as an option, but it’s not essential. Props might suit some couples really well, but might not suit others.

How long do couple sessions usually last?

Usually, couple sessions last anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half. This will vary depending on where you shoot, when you shoot, and who you’ve booked for your session.
