Rebecca Burt knows that how you see yourself isn’t always how others see you. That there’s so much more to a physical body than what we can capture on film. That body acceptance doesn’t just happen because you’ve spent enough time trying to convince yourself that you’re beautiful. Approaching these ideas carefully through her Sessions for the Soul, Rebecca Burt has uncovered something beautiful. Here, we talk to her about how it all began.

1. Tell us what about your 'Sessions For The Soul' concept, how did it come about?

Sessions for the Soul began two years ago as a creative project. I wanted to capture people's souls in a raw, romantic, and emotive way. The very same way we think of ourselves but struggle to see. More recently I decided to take it from being a creative project to a service I now offer.

2. What does body acceptance mean to you?

Body acceptance to me isn't forcing yourself into believing your body is beautiful. It isn't gaslighting your feelings with "positivity." To me, body acceptance means welcoming your feelings about your body and what you see in the mirror. It's accepting that there are going to be good days and that there will also be days you are unkind to yourself. It's accepting that you are worthy of love and taking up space no matter what your size is.

3. How do you make sure clients feel confident and empowered at your shoots?

Energy is powerful. It's easier to make sure your clients feel safe and empowered when you feel safe and empowered. I also have an amazing hair and makeup artist that makes all of my clients feel so special and beautiful. Additionally I play empowering music, feel-good music, and cheer my clients on along the way.

4. What tips can you give other photographers wanting to promote body acceptance through their work?

It begins with you first. Energy is powerful. What energy and information are you putting out? Is it inclusive to all folx and bodies? Are you bringing light and beauty to all bodies? Representation matters.

With so many conflicting messages about what is beautiful, Rebecca reminds us that it can be a slow, tender, and tough journey towards total body acceptance--but completely worthwhile. Wherever you are now is enough.
